Dr. Engel Biography

Dr. Engel was born in St. Marys, a small town in north central Pennsylvania. Growing up, he attended local parochial grade schools where he always loved science. He began his working career as a newspaper delivery person at the age of 12. Elk County Christian was his high school alma mater where he was active in cross country, basketball and track. He competed at the state playoff level in all three sports.

Following high school, Dr. Engel attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. He majored in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. While there, he was a Resident Advisor and Teacher’s Aid and was active in volleyball. It was during his years at Allegheny where he decided to become a dentist.

After Allegheny, Dr. Engel matriculated into the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine. During his time there, he was awarded a US Naval scholarship and entered the Navy immediately upon graduation.

Following graduation from dental school and after being commissioned an officer with the Navy, Dr. Engel participated in a hospital-based general practice residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

The next several years after residency were spent onboard the USS SHREVEPORT (LPD-12) and in local branch dental clinics in the Tidewater area.
It was during this time that Dr. Engel met, fell in love with and married his wife, Amy. He participated in marathons and triathlons – up to the level of half-ironman. As Lieutenant and then Lieutenant Commander, he was also director of Branch Dental Clinic, Northwest Securities Group Activity before being accepted into the Navy’s post-graduate Endodontic specialty program.
Dr. Engel received his Certificate in Endodontics from the National Naval Dental Center in Bethesda, MD. During his time in residency, he participated in advanced research and was awarded a Master of Science degree from The George Washington University. His research results could be found in two publications within the Journal of Endodontics.
After residency, Dr. Engel returned to the fleet and spent his last few years in the Navy serving the United States Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC as an endodontist. During his time at Camp Lejeune, he was the Endodontic department head for two of their branch dental clinics. Additionally, he was also the staff Endodontic advisor for dental residents participating in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program.
Following his time in the service, Dr. Engel was thrilled to be welcomed into the Beach Endodontics’ family and to work beside Dr. Bailey.
